Every Thursday I feature a “throwback” post from my blog archive. The goal is to look back and discover new lessons or opportunities to grow. This week, we’ll look at “New Couch Day” You can view the original post here. For today, here’s a quick recap and a few more thoughts about the way God cares for us.
I will never stop being fascinated by the story of the Israelite’s journey across the wilderness. It is a perfect picture of the way God provides love, care, and discipline to his people. Throughout their time in the desert, He shows up in countless ways to provide food, water, healing, and guidance. Every need these people have, God fills it. Of all of those needs, the most fascinating one to me is found in Deuteronomy 29:5 where we see that their clothes or shoes never wore out. If you know me, you know I love shoes. Maybe that’s why this verse stands out.

To me, it’s about way more than shoes. It’s about appreciating the truth that we serve a God who cares enough about His people to provide for ALL of their needs. God cares about the details from the biggest to the smallest. He is the kind of God that provides in ways we don’t always see. Whether your couch lasts eleven years when it should only last seven, your car keeps running despite having major mechanical issues, or your clothes and shoes don’t wear out even though you’re been walking through the desert for forty years. God is the God who provides.

Would you consider helping me make it happen?
Since that original post, some things have changed, my wife and I have now been married for 15 years, the “new couch,” is now just “the couch” and the original couch has moved on (honestly, neither she nor I remember what we actually did with it.) But what hasn’t changed is that God continues to provide. He has provided for us in big ways and small ones. He has helped us weather major storms and solve the small inconveniences. He continues to show up and he will show up for you as well.
God cares for you. He cares about the big things and the small things. He is concerned with your whole life and your small moments. He is the God that provides. Where have you seen him show up for you?
Our stories are what shape us and reveal our purpose. I wrote a book called “Magic in the Mug” about this very subject. It’s filled with such stories and is all about how those stories can help us discover a life of purpose. I’d love your help getting this book out into the world!
