Sunburn (Throwback Thursday)

Every Thursday I feature a “throwback” post from my blog archive. The goal is to look back and discover new lessons or opportunities to grow. This week, we’ll look at “Sunburn.” You can view the original post here. For today, here’s a quick recap and a few more thoughts about our need for community…

Over the last few weeks, I have thought more than a few times that spring is finally here. While it is according to the calendar the weather here in Omaha has been less than willing to comply. Every time it warms up and I feel like the springtime vibes are here to stay, the temperature plummets within a day or two back to the freezing norms of the winter. It’s very rude.

As I was browsing my archives for this week’s throwback post, my current feelings of temperature trauma caused the title “Sunburn” to jump out at me. I read the post and, in the stylings of my favorite talking snowman, decided to “close my eyes and imagine what it will be like when summer does come.”

There is a longing in each of us for a better place, a better season, or a better situation. When it’s winter, there is a longing for warmer weather, greener grass, and available swimming pools. Isn’t that the human condition? We are a people who are longing, who are waiting, and who are expectant. I know this about myself: When summer gets here and the temperatures hit 103 degrees on a Tuesday afternoon, I’ll be wishing for winter! Are we just greedy people who are never satisfied; or is there more to the story?

Philippians 3 answers this question.

“For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.”

Paul tells us here that the answer is that there is more to the story. We don’t feel satisfied in this place because we’re not designed to be satisfied by this place. The good news is that there is such a place for those whose life is in Jesus and that place is free from the discomforts of this world. We have a savior who has created this place for us in which we will be satisfied and where we will be supremely content in his presence.

Thankfully, the weather here will eventually catch up to the calendar and it will finally feel like spring. I am definitely excited for that day. But our true hope and our true future is found in the day when all things are made new, God’s original intent for creation is restored, and we are surrounded by His presence and His love. I hope you are longing and looking toward that day with way more anticipation and expectation than any day here*.
