We are the Ridiculous (Throwback Thursday)

Every Thursday I feature a “throwback” post from my blog archive. The goal is to take a look back and discover new lessons or new opportunities to grow. This week, we’ll look back at “We Are the Ridiculous.” You can view the original post here. For today, here’s a quick recap and a few more thoughts about chasing our crazy dreams.

Long story short, this is one of my favorite posts I’ve ever written. This is one of the posts that really helped me to see that we can learn about God, about ourselves, and about our purpose anywhere we’re willing to look and listen. If you are looking and listening for God to speak in the ordinary, he’ll show up and speak to you regularly. I mean, God used a breakfast sandwich to encourage me to chase my crazy dreams. Truly, He is consistently showing up and saying, “I see you,” and “I care about what you’re going through.”

Unlike my last throwback Thursday post, I remember this one clearly. After some convincing, I finally broke down and tried grape jelly on a sausage biscuit thanks to an agreement I made with myself about trying new foods. Turns out, it was magical. For years I thought it was the weirdest thing anyone could do to a pork product but I was very wrong. Because of my stubborness, I missed out on what could have been years of biscuit bliss!

Four years later, no matter where I am ordering from*, I still order my sausage biscuits with grape jelly. People still tell me its weird and that’s ok. No one’s perfect. The truth is, if the world isn’t full of ridiculous ideas and dreams its going to get really boring. I belive we serve a creative God who made things like the northern lights, the Grand Canyon, and the duck-billed platypus. And He is the same God that made humanity in His image, declared us the highlight of His creation, and filled our lungs with breath and our hearts with big dreams.

What has he placed in your heart? Is it a song, a poem, a book, or a screenplay? Has he given you a product to create, a service to provide, a message to deliver, or a story to share? Don’t talk yourself out of pursuing it because it sounds crazy. Go after it. Dream big dreams and do great things. Learn great lessons and tell the story at every step of the way. Scripture tells us “that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Phil 1:6 NIV). That doesn’t mean every dream you have is going to come true. Sadly, I’ll never play quarterback in the NFL. What it does mean is that as we puruse the dreams and the purpose that God has placed before us, He will mold and shape us into His image and He will accomplish His intended purpose within us. So dream big, pursue him with everything, and let Him shape you into His image.

What dreams do you have that you’ve been afraid to go after?

*I don’t eat sausage biscuits as often as this post makes it sound. Just felt like everyone should know that.
