This Awesome Life

Over the last few months, I’ve been trying to figure out my “message.” Apparently, every writer has one. For some, they write about goals, for others, leadership, or time management. Still for some, they’ve narrowed their focus all the way down to helping people named Cael or Brixton who weigh 197 lbs. but want to get their weight down to 173 and wear red shoes while they work out. For me though, my writing always felt… random.

Somedays I would write about leadership, and other days fitness or motivation. Some days I would write about once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and some days I would write about the crazy, off-the-cuff things one of my kids said earlier in the week. The more I wrote, the more the pressure to “refine my message” built up. That pressure gave voice to a myriad of thoughts whose message was, unlike mine, laser-focused. Those thoughts all said, “You’ve got nothing to offer.” And for far too long I believed that. In fact, I still wrestle with those thoughts every time I sit down to put pen to paper. (Well, no one does that anymore. We type it. But you get it.)

Thankfully, a few days ago that all changed. There was a moment of clarity that I am committed to clinging to going forward. That clarity shouted that I do have a message, I do have something worth saying, and I do have something to share. What I have, is this awesome life. And I bet you have an awesome life too. Unfortunately, we don’t always see it that way. We overlook the awesome and focus on the negative. We believe our lives are mundane, uninspiring, or boring and we too often miss the truth that there are awesome things happening in the midst of the mundane on a regular basis. We mistakenly associate “flashy” with awesome and think that if our life isn’t both, it’s neither.

Let’s change that mindset. What if we started to explore our stories and excavate those moments where God shows up and shows off? What if we shared those stories with each other so that together, we can all walk forward knowing we are loved, we are valued, and we are blessed with our own awesome lives?

That’s the kind of community I hope to create here. So, here’s what you can expect from me. At least once a week, I will share a story from this awesome life and the lessons I’ve learned by living it. Hopefully, it will make you laugh, give you some encouragement, and leave you with something you can put to work in your own awesome life. Further, I hope you’ll see yourself somewhere in the story and you’ll know that you’re not alone.

In return, I’d love for you to share your stories here as well. The comments will be open for you to share your similar experiences, ask questions, or just get connected to a community of people who can say, “I’ve been there,” “It gets better,” and “I’m here for you.” Will you join me on this journey? We all have awesome lives and awesome stories to share. Welcome to mine and welcome to This Awesome Life.
