What are you looking for?

Not too long ago my wife and I organized an Easter egg hunt for our community. We “hid” a couple hundred eggs around the area and invited kids to come out and find them and enjoy the awesomeness hidden within. From the word go (and maybe slightly before) the kids were everywhere grabbing eggs, filling baskets, and getting excited about how much candy they were going to eat later that day.

While watching (from a distance) I noticed something interesting… not a single kid “found” anything that wasn’t an Easter egg. No one found a puppy, or a chicken egg, or even a rock or a pinecone (even though three of the things on this list were definitely nearby.) Why? That’s not what they were looking for. It’s kind of funny because kids love rocks, pinecones, and puppies. But that day, their love for those things paled in comparison to the love of what they were there for… candy.

What can we learn from this? We have the ability to find what we’re looking for. I am not just talking about your kids lost shoe, the keys that you most definitely put in the bowl by the front door the last time you had them, or the TV remote right before game time. I am talking about your life. What is it that you are looking for? Is it better relationships, new opportunities, personal development? Whatever it is you are looking for you can find it if you stay the course.

The problem is when life punches us in the face we begin to think that this is “just the way it is.” We start looking around every corner for the next punch to come our way and guess what… we usually find it. What if instead we started looking for the good things and focusing on them. I bet it would change the way we see our lives and the others we are walking through it with. When negative situations arise, see them as opportunities instead of obstacles and know that they can better, stronger, or more prepared for the future. We find what we are looking for, look for greatness today!
